Dance Therapy Intervention: Space

Taking up lots of space in movement can help you feel confident about your presence and how much of you is being seen. Getting familiar with the space around your body lets you know your “personal bubble” boundaries and understand intuitively when someone else gets too close.

It’s also important to know when you need to share space. If you were to try this with someone else in a small room, you’d have to make your movements smaller to make space for their expression too.

When you have a conversation, do you take up enough space to express your desires? Your needs? Do you leave space for someone else to talk so you can listen? Space happens everywhere, in many dimensions. If you’re not used to taking up space, start very small and gradually expand. T

ake a break if it gets too uncomfortable and try again when you’re regrounded.
